United expands mobile passport scanning for international flights – Chicago Tribune

Chicago-based United Airlines on Wednesday introduced to its mobile app the ability to check in for international flights by scanning their passport with a mobile device.

The app uses the mobile device’s camera to capture a traveler’s passport, similar to a mobile banking deposit. Jumio Inc., a credentials management company, then verifies the passport. After verification, customers can get a boarding pass.

Passengers can access the passport scanning feature when checking in for international flights 24 hours before departure.

Fliers requiring additional travel documentation, such as visas, need to continue to check in at the airport, United said. United said it is the first U.S. airline to introduce mobile passport scanning.
